Until recently I hadn't really needed to use DNNBackup, but it had always seemed to work quite nicely. Last week we moved our site from one hosting provider to another. The previous hosting provider required a helpdesk ticket opened to request a SQL backup and the timeliness of their responses left something to be desired (one of the reasons we switched hosts). I used DNNBackup to create full backups of our site, tested restoring them on my local machine as well as on the staging site of our new hosting provider. I was able to do this many times until I was certain everything was going well. We were able to move our site in under an hour and have an exact copy of the site from the previous hosting provider at the moment in time that we created the backup. This is a fantastic product, not only as an insurance policy against something bad happening, but also for moving sites around and making it easy to create local copies of a production site for testing new modules, skins, settings,

To rebuild (in case of a servercrash) or move a siteo another ISP isn't to my opinion straightforward in DNN but this script will make it lot easier. No SQL-queries needed, just some initial settings and then press the 'backup-button'. Scheduled backup and automatic FTP to external-bakupsite is possible. This is an awesome product. I have no experience with Programming, and I was able to figure it out with minimal reading on how Primary Keys, and Stored Procedures work and are related. The documentation needs to be better organized. The module works great for normal daily backups. It falls short when it comes to restoring stored procedures in the database. For a small personal site this is fine. I have ran into a few occasions where the application was unable to properly restore my site after an error. The module is by no means a enterprise grade application.

This module works better than the backup on my server. This is a lifesaver for commercial sites. I have also used it to clone sites on shared servers where I didn't have access to the database directory where the backups where stored. The user interface is hard on the eyes, and needs to be dressed up a little. The documentation for this module is a little vague, and may not be suitable for beginning users. The functionality of the module is perfect. It installs with no errors and there were no conflicts with any of 30 premium modules I have installed on one of my sites. If the user intereface was better designed graphically, and the documentation was better written and organized, this would be a 5 star module.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do, and that is work! Godaddy is TOO restrictive on everything, but with this tool you can get it up there, running, and get it done NOW! It took my site about 1/2 hour, with all the adjustments I had to make, but the software is quick, and the instructions are clear. Worth the money, get it if you are on godaddy and you plan to move your site from a non-godaddy machine to them (for the first time or not). Remeber you cannot RESTORE a DB that is backuped on a NON-GODADDY server, but with this, no problem...

This module was an error free install on DNN 4.7. The documentation for this module isn't very good. It doesn't do a good job explaining all the features, and just assumes you are an expert at SQL servers. Once you figure it all out on your own, you can appreciate the way this module works. It does a great job for version backups for my e-commerce site. I still not been able to clone a DNN site with it though, all i get is a dreaded web.config error.

BackupScript is a must have solution with Godaddy. Godaddy is cheap for DotNetNuke Hosting and they provide huge webspace and bandwith, but they dont provide auto backup/restore function. Once i contacted them they requested 150 usd for a restore. And that fee was one time fee. Instead of changing Godaddy, i decided to go with a Backup solution. And contacted with Evotiva. First i would like to thank support team for providing test license before purchase. I also, worked with DNNCassini Project (i dunno it still exist). After seeing module working perfectly i decided to buy it. I'm using it since last year and Godaddy was painless with Evotiva. I also would like mention about response time. Fantastic software. Did exactly what I wanted which was to clone a live site on a local host both as a backup and as a test ground. I am very pleased with the final results. The instructions provided were useful for setting up the module and making backups and restore. However I wish there were more detailed step by step instructions on setup of websites in IIS (as website rather than application) so that I didn't have to spend time with support to work it out (which took a week or so). Support was extremely helpful and technically knowledgeable. I wish all the instructions they gave me in my emails were given upfront in dedicated manuals and guidelines to facilitate the process and also make it easier to understand the steps to go through before purchase. A video guide is of course the most ideal. Nevertheless, an excellent 5 star software. Good job.

I am very pleased with DNNBackup. Installation was easy and backupping was not difficult either. I often had problems when upgrading DNN. I did not have a proper backup system and therefore always had to ask my hosting provider to restore my database which always cost me money. Now I cloned my Website to my local Laptop PC tried to upgrade DNN 5.6.3 to 6.0.0, which did not work (as expected). So restored the site with DNNBackup/Restore, which worked perfectly. Absolutely the best for backup, restoration and moving your site to different host. With Basic knowledge I am by no means a pro. I was backing up my DNN deployment in MINUTES! I had a couple weird issues occur during restoration to a new ISP, so I submitted an email to the Dev! I mean in MINUTES he was on the case, helping me, guiding me, giving good advice! I am no slouch at this, I have been doing webdev for almost 10 years, and I was impressed by the support I was receiving and the information being offered. Whenever I upgrade or make any major changes to the DNN site, I use this backup module and it acts like Insurance: if you experience a loss [of DNN functionality after an upgrade or a major change], you can claim [restore from the backup] easily. This module is a MUST-HAVE! The functionality is no doubt one of the things that professional users of dotnetnuke miss most: backup/restore functionality from within & transportation between environments. Instead of having to go through the pain of manually taking backups of your database and files, and logging on to the server / FTP to do all that, having all of this done by a module is a great idea. Not only a time-saver, but also a life-saver as you'll need a backup lying around when you least expect it... And if you don't have control over restoring but have to rely on your hosting company to do it, this is a way to take control. Regarding the options of the module: they are really extensive. For example, you can set which folders to exclude on the file backup, or which tables on the database backup, you can customize buffers for the zip and set the amount of compression, etc. You might want to fiddle with some these options depending on your environment's available resource

This works great with godaddy. First I created a folder in godaddy's host area using the Directory Management tool. I called the folder DN and gave it read, web, brouse, write, root permissions. Then selected Value Applications and loaded DNN 4.5.3 to the DN folder. Thus this was a DNN AUTO load. I loaded the Backupscript 2.0.4 per the instructions and did a database & portal backup. Changed a page on my website then did a restore. It worked perfectly. The only thing you must do is go to HOST->Settings->Advanced Settings->Other Settings, and clear the cache to see the Restored changes. It works perfectly with the godaddy Auto installed DNN website. Support from Evotiva was excellent and highly recommend this to other godaddy customers.

Great tool! Works just as advertised. Very easy to transfer your site to a different provider. For people like me who program a lot it's ideal too: first a back up before trying something new. The support is exellent too.

A much needed and excellent module with fast and knowledgeable support. I purchased BackupScript initially to down-grade a DNN install from SQL 2005 to 2000 and it worked perfectly. Horacio responded to my problem (I had a DNN 4.0.2 install, and the module only worked properly with 4.0.3) within minutes. The technical support is really good. This is an extremely powerful program. I have been able to automate backups so they go to my DropBox account. I was able to restore the my site to my localHost server and it works flawlessly. I have since upgraded to newer versions. Great program!

Installation is easy, and I love the ability to migrate a site to a new host. This has saved me HOURS of work and blown up DNN sites. When migrating to a new host, it even knows to change the portal alias so I don't have to spoof my IP address. Very nice program that just works.

On a new box with a new 2008 r2 installation and dnn was setup default with WebPlatform Installer, the product simply is unable to restore. Reaction from the helpdesk : The error is “CREATE DATABASE permission denied”. This is ‘outside’ the module. This permission has to be configured on the Database server. If you don’t ‘own’ the database server (ISP / hosted site) you cannot fix it. You should ask them to grant this permission. Most probably they will say ‘no’. If this is the case, instead of ‘native’, you should try a ‘script’ kind of database backup & restore.

Let us explain this again: If you want native backup/restore (which is the best 1:1 backup option); the proper file system permissions must be granted in the file system and the proper permissions must be granted on the SQL SERVER for the user/credentials under which both server processes (your IIS web application and SQL Server) are running. A great product if your ISP doesn't provide SQL backups that are accessable to you. I finally moved to a different ISP, and real SQL backups are important to have.

You can always restore without having a running DNN --- --- --- --- --- --- (BackupScript 2.0.4) Hi David. I agree that for a site backup would be better an ISP that allows native sql backups (BackupNative could be also useful on some of these scenarios). Please also note that the module is useful not just for full site backup/restore. e.g. it can script your data structure and you can script data for individual tables. May be your intention was give a 3 to your former ISP, not the module...

I have purchased two of these back-up programs for two different web sites. It was not the hardest to setup, but not as easy as they make it sound, I did need to email them a couple of times. (I'm a good end user and I teach classes on how to use computers in home and small business setting, no rocket science stuff) What really gave this a bad review is that I needed it to restore a web site after moving it from one hosting provider to another, after 15- 20 or so emails it still does not work. They assume you know a lot about web terminology and how thing work in this environment. If it was so easy they would sell their services to reload it for you, but do to the many variables it is not easy at all. I would and I'm looking for a better back-up system. Your problems has nothing to do with the module. You have ISP missconfiguration and/or Internet Information server / windows problems. We could tell you this as a reply to your first email and tell you to find someone how helps you to set up your site (NOTE: -end user- is not someone used to deal with ISP stuff, IIS, ASP.NET problems - You know absolutely nothing about this, as your emails clearly show). Instead of that, we tried to help providing you a lot of FREE support about a lot of things that as said has nothing to do with the module (as you said, 15- 20 or so emails). In summary (some - partial list - of his problems on clean sites - still NO backupscript running there): * 500 - internal server error * Server Error in /dnn Application. / Validation of viewstate MAC failed * DNS problems * he installed a MYSQL database instead of SQL SERVER * he was uploading PHP files, nothing to do with a DNN site * he doesn’t know how to setup a blank web site in his ISP provider (thus, problems with Could not load file or assembly DotNetNuke; HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed; etc. * etc. * besides this, e.g. took 10 emails for him to paste the license key on its textbox In short: he is far far away from his auto-definition of himself as a 'good end user' Thank you. I'm batting .500 (50%) using this module. I manage 2 websites. I've successfully restored one of those websites after some wacky page creation went astray - just like it was supposed to work. On my other website (which unfortunately for me has a little more visibilty when I used this module to restore it "completed with errors" and crushed the site. I had to have my host provider restore from the previous nights backup. I am having a sandbox created to evalaute what went wrong but now I am reluctant to trust this module .... unfortunately when you NEED to use a backup it kinda NEEDS to always work. So the lesson here is try it before you really NEED TO. I'll update this post pending the resolution of my sandbox efforts.

Please be sure to be running the latest version (5.3.8 was updated today; March 12,2011) for both the backup and restore operations. The 5.2.3 version is too old, given how fast the DNN core and 3rd party modules changes.

I had a very poor experience with Evotiva BackupScript. I am a very experienced DNN developer but never could get BackupScript to work. I did notice that the seller deletes all reviews on his website of his software that are not 5 stars. I caught one review that was very poor but within an hour it had been deleted. The developer called me a liar whenever I reported a problem. I finally had to ask for a refund from SnowCovered because there was no way to follow the poorly written documentation and the support person kept accusing me of lying. The developer still continues to insult me because I put in a bad review for his software. He is very unprofessional.
